India is steadily strengthening its position in the global artificial intelligence sector. The country is combining government investment, access to computing infrastructure and a flexible approach to regulation to build an AI ecosystem that supports innovation while keeping democratic safeguards in focus.

Artificial intelligence is changing the way economies, governments and businesses operate. India is now looking to move beyond its established position as a global software and technology services hub and become a stronger force in AI.

India AI Mission Gets a Major Push

The India AI Mission, supported by an allocation of Rs 10,372 crore, is at the centre of the country’s AI strategy.

The mission is focused on expanding computing capacity, encouraging research, helping startups and building AI skills. One of its key initiatives is the development of shared computing facilities with more than 38,000 GPUs.

The idea is to make computing resources available to a wider group instead of allowing advanced AI infrastructure to remain concentrated among a handful of large companies.

For startups, researchers and smaller organisations, access to such infrastructure can make it easier to experiment with AI and develop new applications.

Talent and Business Adoption Strengthen India’s Position

India’s large technology talent pool remains one of its biggest advantages. Businesses are also adopting AI at a fast pace.

According to the report, 87 per cent of Indian enterprises have already adopted AI solutions. The country’s AI market is expected to reach $131.31 billion by 2032.

India has also performed strongly in global rankings. It stood third in Stanford University’s 2025 Global AI Vibrancy Ranking, behind the United States and China.

These numbers show that India’s AI story is not limited to government programmes. Companies, technology professionals and startups are also becoming important parts of the country’s growing AI ecosystem.

AI Takes Centre Stage in Global Engagements

India’s growing interest in AI is also visible in its international engagements.

During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s engagements in France and at the G7 Summit, AI was an important topic in discussions around innovation, digital infrastructure, research and responsible technology.

The Bharat Innovates 2026 event also helped present India’s technology capabilities to an international audience. The event covered areas including AI, fintech, healthcare, space and deep technology.

These developments show India’s effort to build a stronger international presence in emerging technologies and not remain limited to its traditional software-services identity.

India Takes a Flexible Approach to AI Rules

India’s approach to AI regulation is another important part of the country’s strategy.

Instead of introducing highly restrictive rules, the government is following a framework that aims to allow innovation while dealing with concerns around privacy, bias, misinformation, cybersecurity and digital sovereignty.

This is an important balancing act. AI development needs room to grow, but governments also need to consider how these technologies affect citizens, businesses and national interests.

For India, the focus is therefore not only on developing AI capabilities but also on creating rules that can address its risks without unnecessarily slowing down innovation.

Digital Infrastructure Gives India an Added Advantage

India already has a large digital ecosystem that can support the wider use of AI in public services.

Platforms such as Aadhaar, UPI, DigiLocker and BHASHINI form part of the country’s Digital Public Infrastructure. These platforms have helped India deliver digital services at a large scale and at affordable costs.

The report points to this infrastructure as an important base for AI-enabled public services. It also notes that India’s digital public platforms are being viewed internationally as examples of scalable and affordable digital governance.

India’s AI Strategy Goes Beyond Technology

India’s AI ambitions are being built around several factors rather than a single programme.

Government funding, shared computing infrastructure, technology talent, startup support, business adoption and Digital Public Infrastructure are all contributing to the country’s growing AI capabilities.

At the same time, the government is trying to keep regulation flexible enough to encourage innovation while addressing issues such as privacy, cybersecurity, misinformation, bias and digital sovereignty.

The Rs 10,372 crore India AI Mission, access to more than 38,000 GPUs, strong enterprise adoption and India’s existing digital infrastructure give the country a substantial base for its next phase of AI growth.

India’s challenge now is to turn these investments and capabilities into sustained innovation and wider adoption. If it can continue building infrastructure, supporting talent and maintaining a practical regulatory approach, the country is positioned to play a much larger role in the global AI landscape.
